This lengthy review is for the Mark C. Smith Concert Hall at the Von Braun Center. I’m not as concerned about having wasted $250 for a concert here on 9/27/25 as I am knowing that this was probably the first experience for many in the audience of the immensely talented a cappella group, Home Free. We have been to Home Free concerts all over the U.S., in both large and small venues with varied acoustics, and this group is consistently incredible!! For anyone who attended their concert here on 9/27/25, please know that you did not get the opportunity to actually hear them! Not even top notch concert earplugs could filter out the ringing in our ears from the distorted audio. We had to leave at intermission, as we did not want to endure more of the painfully tinny sound quality. There was also a group touring with Home Free (The Longest Johns), and while I cannot personally attest to their usual performance quality - it was clear that the audio being unintelligible impacted their usage of humor. They were probably saying the funniest things and keep looking out at the audience for the expected reaction, only to get blank stares, since we could only interpret bits and pieces of their words. Both groups of performers continually fiddled with their earpieces, apparently just as disappointed with the audio as the audience. Thankfully my husband and I were so close we could read lips, (ORC1A seats 17 and 18), because we could not understand words being sung or spoken. I’m not sure how it is possible for audio to be so crackly and distorted, and we noticed others in the audience taking out their earplugs and looking around trying to figure out what the sound problem was. Additionally, please listen to the reviews who mention booking seats a few rows back, as our premium “front row” seats were somehow below the elevation of the pit seats in front of us, blocking our view. We also assumed the audio was a temporary issue that was being addressed by the venue, but by intermission we realized nothing was likely to be done about it. Several reviews here mention the audio issue in similar detail, and I wish we would have researched prior. The primary reason to attend a music or voice based concert is for the sound, and to have it botched so badly defeats the value of the experience. It seems that this is a well known issue, and I doubt any benefit would be achieved by our requesting a refund at this point. That said, if enough people raise the issue, perhaps things will improve, so I’m writing this review with that goal in mind. Huntsville deserves to have outstanding experiences! I also hope future reviewers will share if/when the sound problems are ever fixed. We won’t return until this is confirmed to be resolved. We have only been in Alabama for a few years, and this was our first experience with the Von Braun Center. Based on our experience of walking out halfway through a concert we had excitedly booked the minute it was for sale, we unfortunately will choose Nashville or Birmingham venues in the future. Now for the positive aspects: The seats are nice and spacious, and the venue was clean and at a comfortable temperature at least for the portion of the concert we saw before we left at the half way point. We arrived only an hour early and still landed a perfect parking spot right out front for only $15. Based on front door concert parking prices in larger cities, this seemed quite the bargain. I also greatly valued the ample security staff. We felt very safe and well cared for, and the ushers were so friendly and helpful! Bravo on crowd control and for providing great assistance to all who sought directions or info, including us. If the audio problems are ever resolved in the future, we’d love to return.
Nice small theater for plays depending on your seating. Sound setup isn't great for understand what they're saying but it's plenty loud enough. Bathrooms are apparently only on the first floor.
We liked our seats. All the attendants were friendly and helpful. There were some sound issues throughout the evening during the concert, but overall it was an enjoyable experience.
As one of the few venues here. It is a good site. The seats are a bit tight for larger people but the balcony's are an excellent view and value
Great venue. I really enjoyed seeing The Longest Johns & Home Free perform here (I hope they visit here again). This hall also did a great job hosting Alton Brown's Last Bite.
