The Westside Theatre Upstairs is an intimate Off-Broadway venue that represents the heart of New York's vibrant alternative theater scene. This smaller theater space specializes in hosting innovative productions that push creative boundaries, from experimental dramas to intimate musicals that might be too unconventional for larger Broadway houses. The venue has built a reputation for nurturing bold artistic voices and providing audiences with thought-provoking theatrical experiences that often feel more personal and immediate than their Broadway counterparts.
The intimate setting creates an electric atmosphere where every seat offers a close connection to the performers. The proximity between audience and stage eliminates the fourth wall, making you feel like part of the story unfolding before you. This closeness allows for nuanced performances and subtle emotional moments that might be lost in larger venues, while the smaller audience size creates a sense of shared discovery among theatergoers witnessing something special.
Located in the bustling Theater District, the Westside Theatre sits among the iconic Broadway houses that define this legendary neighborhood. The area pulses with pre-show energy as audiences stream toward marquees, street performers entertain passersby, and the neon glow of theater signs illuminates the sidewalks. Despite being surrounded by the grandeur of Broadway, this Off-Broadway gem offers a more accessible and adventurous alternative to the district's blockbuster productions.

I went to see Little Shop of Horrors to celebrate our newest cast members Madeline Brewer and Thomas Doherty. My seats were great (1st row center orchestra) which it made me feel immersive in the show the entire time. It’s a small theatre comparing to the other venues. However, it provides amazing acoustics and views from whatever you’re seated. The actors were super talented, brilliant performances. If you like the movie you’re going to LOVE this show! It’s a must-see.
My wife and I went to see the Little Shop of Horrors musical at the Westside Theatre Upstairs during our visit to NYC as part of her 60th birthday celebrations - this was the last of the 5 Broadway shows we saw during this trip to the Big Apple and it was the smallest of all the theatres we went to. Upon entry through the main entrance into the theatre we were directed upstairs to the bar area with female & males toilets. We then had to go up another flight of steps to get to our seats in the theatre. We bought tickets for the show via the Ticketmaster website and they were great value for seats on the side, 4 rows from the stage - we were so close we felt we were on stage with the actors! The Westside Theatre Upstairs is very small with a capacity for just 250 people, so it's very itimate and cosy with the stage reaching out directly to the audience - my wife likened it to our small local Guiseley theatre back in England. There was only a small cast of performers but they were all excellent. The female lead was played by Madeline Brewer who plays the Character of Janine in the hit TV series 'The Handmaid's Tail'. She has a great singing voice - who knew? There was an orchestra playing live during the musical but they were hidden behind the scenes as the theatre wasn't big enough to have an orchestra pit in front of stage. However, they were introduced to the audience by the cast during their curtain call at the end of the great show via a video link. The 2 puppeteers operating the giant alien plant also joined the cast for the curtain call.
Little Shop of Horrors is such a fun and entertaining musical – I highly recommend seeing it! Since the venue isn’t too large, it creates a cozy and intimate atmosphere that really enhances the experience. One great surprise was that all the cast members stayed after the show to sign autographs and take photos with the audience. Just a heads-up: if you plan to get drinks during intermission, be prepared for steep prices (we paid nearly $60 for two glasses of wine).
We just saw this past weekend a fantastic production of Little Shop of Horrors at this charming theater. Despite its small size, the venue has a warm atmosphere, friendly staff, and comfortable seating. Elizabeth Gillies and Milo Manheim SHINE in their roles, bringing fresh energy to the classic story. The entire cast is pitch-perfect, delivering a captivating performance that had the audience thoroughly entertained. The overall performance was fabulous!!! As a suggestion: It would be great if the beverage stand could offer cold drinks or provide ice. It would really enhance the experience. Thank you!
Went to see Little Shop of Horrors and it was AMAZING! Had the incredible honor of seeing Milo Manheim and Elizabeth Gillies perform and they were incredible ❤️ the theater is smaller than other Broadway shows but it feels more intimate and there's really not a bad seat anywhere. There's not a lot of room when someone has to pass by but your view is not obscured by someone in front of you, I sat in the center orchestra in row K and had a great view. Amazing experience! Would come see another show here, it's far from the craziness of Times Square but not too far a walk if you have a hotel around that area.
