An award-winning restoration from a 1904 playhouse, The Harvey is a bold theater venue. Former Executive Producer Harvey Lichtenstein discovered what would become the Harvey Theater when looking for a new kind of venue for Peter Brook's eight-hour production of The Mahabharata. The award-winning renovation that followed beautifully preserved the deconstructed feels of the space, resulting in a striking theater with the ambience of a timeless ruin. The Harvey has since served as the unique setting for major stage and broadcast productions. The Harvey Theater recently underwent a renovation and expansion as a part of the BAM Strong, which also features the brand new Rudin Family Gallery and the Robert W. Wilson Sculpture Terrace. Love this theater. It's beautiful and feels intimate, but surprisingly large capacity. Seats are a little tight and the theater was a bit chilly, but had a great time. They also charge you for reusable cups when you get a beverage, so bring it back if you've gotten one and they won't add that on/charge you for it.
BAM (Brooklyn Academy of Music) is a cultural gem that consistently delivers thought-provoking performances across theater, dance, music, and film. The historic space blends classic architecture with a modern edge, creating an intimate yet grand atmosphere. Their programming is diverse and innovative, often featuring international artists and groundbreaking work you won’t find anywhere else. Staff is well-organized, and the audience experience is smooth, from ticketing to seating.
We saw safety not guaranteed here and it was a great space. Seats were comfy and we had a great view of all the stage. The box office was a little unorganized and we were directed to two people before they were able to figure out where to collect our tickets. The same thing happened to another group.
Saw the Taraj Harrell dance performance here the other nite. The theater is absolutely gorgeous. However, I must add that if you have any mobility issues, you will probably want to AVOID being seated in the balcony area. The stairs are incredibly steep and the seating is also cumbersome - just getting up and letting people into your row can be quite a production.
