Minneapolis, MN
The Wurtele Thrust Stage at the Guthrie Theater represents one of Minneapolis's most distinctive theatrical experiences, featuring an intimate thrust configuration where the audience surrounds the stage on three sides. This innovative design creates an unusually close connection between performers and patrons, making it ideal for both powerful dramas and engaging musicals that benefit from such proximity and energy.
Attending a performance here feels remarkably intimate, as no seat is far from the action and actors often move through and interact with the audience space. The thrust configuration means you might catch subtle facial expressions and hear whispered lines that would be lost in a traditional proscenium theater, creating an almost cinematic closeness to the storytelling. The acoustics are carefully designed to ensure every word carries clearly throughout the space, while the surrounding seating creates an electric sense of shared experience among the audience.
Nestled within the iconic Guthrie Theater complex along the Mississippi River, the venue sits in Minneapolis's vibrant Mill District, where historic flour mills have been transformed into a cultural corridor. The area buzzes with pre-show energy as theatergoers arrive, often combining their evening with dinner at nearby restaurants or a riverside stroll. The modern theater building itself has become an architectural landmark, and arriving here feels like stepping into a space purpose-built for serious theatrical artistry.

Was in the area for the farmers market. Heard that the theater was open for touring, so we took advantage of the opportunity. The entire facility is so creatively designed. Plenty of areas showcase interesting architectural forms. And then there are the spots that allow different views of the surrounding area. They use a combination of form, light, and space to stimulate your senses. Really enjoyed the cantilevered (blue) structure that led outside to an open area for viewing the river and bridges. Didn't actually get to see the theater itself — those areas were not open to the public. So glad we had a chance to check it out.
We went to see the Cabaret and I was blown away! I loved all of it! Such an auspicious message. Well done play, gorgeous venue. My only complaint is the upper deck was closed, at the end of the "arm", ( the amazing cantilevered extension on the building overlooking the river)
The staff was helpful and professional and their August 2025 production of Cabaret was life changing! We’ve come back to see it a second time and it was just as magnificent.
We saw Cabaret this time. Like always we enjoyed the show. Before the show we went up to the 9th level to the yellow observation area. Always love going to the shows here
I had the honor of photographing this beautiful wedding at the Guthrie theater and it was such an awesome spot to host a wedding! The location has so many nearby spots for photos and also the staff is truly amazing, I couldn't recommend them more! I look forward to photographing there again!
